Definition is an ulcer that occurs on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity. Gum ulcer are very common, occurring in association with many diseases and by many different mechanisms, but usually there is no serious underlying cause. Rarely, a gum ulcer that does not heal may be a sign of oral cancer

Differential diagnosis Traumatic ulceration Mechanical ulceration Thermal and electrical burn Chemical injury Irradiation Mortality rate decreased d/t discovery of H. Pylori and PPI’s.

cause Infection Drug-induced Malignanc Allergy Other causes Hematological  include anemia,  leukemia,   Gastrointestinal  include celiac disease, Crohn's disease , ulcerative colitis.  Dermatological causes include chronic ulcerative stomatitis

Treatment gum ulcer Treatment is cause-related, to symptomatic Maintaining good oral. Atopical analgesic (e.g. benzydamine mouthwash) may reduce pain. Anti- inflammation such as (gels, creams or inhalers) or systemic steroids may be used to reduce inflammation.  antifungal drug may be used to prevent oral candidiasis  People with gum ulcers may prefer to avoid hot or spicy foods, which can increase the pain. In both types of peptic ulceration, gastric and duodenal, there is an imbalance between secretion and neutralization of secreted acid. In duodenal ulcers there is an oversecretion of acid whilst in gastric ulcers there is an impairment of mucosal protection
