Lesson 4 – Represent Proportional Relationships with Equations In this lesson, you will learn to represent a proportional relationship with an equation and to use equations to solve problems about proportional relationships.

Essential Question How can you represent a proportional relationship with an equation using different variables?  Why does each proportional relationship have two equations?

Proportional Relationship Equations For any proportional relationship, there will be two values for “k” and two equations. This is because there are two possible unit rates with any proportional relationship. Remember, the constant of proportionality and unit rate are the same thing!

Practice Problem 1 Lina buys a new car. She travels 96 miles using 4 gallons of gasoline. Write two equations to represent this proportional relationship.

Practice Problem 2 Adam runs 13 miles in 2 hours. If he keeps up the same pace, how far can he run in 5 hours?
