England was the first land where people spoke English. The History of Anglo-Saxon England covers the history of early medieval England. From the end of Roman Britain and the establishment of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in the 5th century until the Conquest by the Normans in 1066.  

Before that England had been the home of Iron Age tribes known as the Celts, and for a time, part of the Roman Empire.

The Angles, Saxons, and Jutes

The Angles, Saxons, and Jutes In the beginning of 400 A.D, tribes from the north like the Angles, Saxons, and the Jutes settled down in England. Some people saw them as invaders, while others viewed them as settlers.

Old English Form of writing they used during the Middle Ages Was used throughout the Middle Ages and has improved overtime to the English we use today

Beowulf Beowulf is a long poem about a fictional hero named Beowulf, who goes to Denmark to help defeat the monster called Grendel. After defeating the monster, Beowulf has to fight Grendel’s mother and a terrible dragon. It was written in the 8th century but who the storyteller was and who wrote it down is unknown.

Anglo-Saxon Chronicle The only written article surviving from the early middle ages. It tells of battles, invasions, and changed of that time period.

Old English Alphabet

England and English got their names from the Angles. People who speak English today cannot read Old English Old English looks like a foreign language

The name England and English did not came from the Saxons, but from the Angles. The Angles were one of many Germanic tribes who settled in the territory during the 5th and 6th centuries.
