College of Arts & Sciences Lecturer Promotion Dossier assembly workshop fall 2017

Criteria for promotion to senior lecturer A lecturer is eligible for promotion to senior lecturer typically after a minimum of five years of regular (full- time) service at the rank of lecturer. Evidence of excellence in teaching. Professional development, as evidenced by appropriate activities in support of the expected instructional practices. Evidence of notable contributions to the university’s instructional mission, within the faculty member’s assigned role.

Criteria for promotion to distinguished lecturer A senior lecturer is eligible for promotion to distinguished lecturer typically after three to five years of regular (full-time) service at the rank of senior lecturer. Evidence of consistent excellence in teaching; including the following activities: evidence of course or curricular development; evidence of pedagogical innovation. Continuing professional development; including the following activities: attendance at meetings directed at improving instruction; incorporation of innovative course materials or instructional techniques; awards or other recognition for teaching. Evidence of outstanding contributions to the university’s instructional mission, within the faculty member’s assigned role.

Number of dossiers required Original + 3 copies (Deliver all to College) Original + 2 copies will go to the Office of the Provost 1 copy stays in the College Office 1 original dossier checklist (clipped to front of original dossier) 1 digital dossier (single document in true pdf format, not just a scan, emailed to Marla Roberts at mrober56@utk.edu) Only scanned documents allowed are pages with original signatures. All other pages must be in true pdf format.

Physical requirements of Dossier No binders, no covers, no dividers between sections — just paper, held together with a simple binder clip NO title pages, tables of contents. Single-sided copies only. 50-page limit (excluding the summary sheet and curriculum vitae)

Numbering of pages in dossier The dossier is divided into four sections, A through D. The first page of each section begins with 1, thus, A-1, B-1, etc. Page numbers should be typed at the bottom center of each page.

Supplemental Materials It is recommended that supplemental materials be submitted in electronic form (links to websites or as PDF files) and sent electronically to Marla Roberts which allows the materials to be posted for the committee’s viewing convenience along with the electronic dossier. The College encourages the inclusion of a cover letter contextualizing your contributions as a lecturer. This cover letter shall be included as the first page of your supplemental materials.

Head’s/director’s Responsibility for Assembly Manages materials provided by candidate Provides description of responsibilities Provides annual evaluations during the review period (since the last promotion or for the last five years, as applicable) Provides peer evaluations of instruction during the review period (at least two for promotion to senior & at least one for promotion to distinguished) Organizes“best” and “least” liked teaching qualities from student narratives according to general trends/themes

2017 – 2018 Lecturer promotion timeline January 9 Department notifies College of those standing for Lecturer Promotion (submit list to M. Roberts; mrober56@utk.edu) College January 26 Eligible Lecturers submit dossiers to their department. (Some Departments may set an earlier deadline, so be sure to check with your Department Head.) Department February 21 Lecturer Promotion Dossiers due to College (submit dossiers to M. Roberts; mrober56@utk.edu; 312 Ayres Hall) (Please notice that this deadline is sooner than what appears on the Provost’s recommended timeline.) March College Lecturer and Promotion Committee reviews candidate dossiers and submits recommendations to Dean of College in early-April. April College Dean and Associate Deans review candidate dossiers. Early-May Dean makes recommendation to the Provost’s Office and notifies Department Head and Candidate of Dean’s recommendation. Early-June Provost notifies candidates of outcome of the process. Provost
