Circulatory and Respiratory Systems
Respiratory System The respiratory system is the system in the human body that allows us to breathe. It has two important functions – It brings oxygen.
The Circulatory System
Recall… The main function of the respiratory system is to oxygen to and removes carbon dioxide from the blood (gas exchange) The system that transports.

The Circulatory system Our body’s transportation system

Circulatory System Transports oxygen and nutrients throughout the body.

The respiratory and circulatory systems work together to maintain homeostasis. The circulatory system transports blood and other materials. brings supplies to cells carries away wastes separates oxygen-poor and oxygen-rich blood Oxygen-poor blood Oxygen-rich blood

The respiratory system is where gas exchange occurs. picks up oxygen from inhaled air expels carbon dioxide and water nose sinus mouth epiglottis trachea lungs

circulatory system The circulatory system includes: the heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries. heart pumps blood throughout body arteries move blood away from heart veins move blood back to heart capillaries get blood to and from cells veins arteries

The heart The heart is a muscle. This muscle is call the myocardium Contractions by the myocardium pump blood through the circulatory system

Heart Structure Heart has a right and left side Right half pumps blood to the lungs to get oxygen Left half pumps blood throughout the bod

Circulation through the body The heart functions as two separate pumps Oxygen-rich blood flows into left side of the heart and pumped through the rest of the body Blood returns to the heart oxygen-poor. Oxygen-poor blood sent to the lungs to become oxygen-rich

Heart Disease Leading cause of death in America Heart cells dies as a result of lack of oxygen Lack of oxygen = Heart attack Why does this happen?

Blood Vessels Blood moving from the heart flows through 3 types of blood vessels. Arteries: -Large vessels that carry blood from the heart to tissues in the body -have thick walls to protect from pressure of heart beat

Blood vessels Capillaries: Smallest blood vessels Very thin walls Bring nutrients and oxygen to the cells Veins -Blood returns to the heart through the veins
