Plate 1 Answers B) Identify the painter of this vase. Lydos (ii) To which style of vase painters did he belong? Attic grand style

Plate 1 Answers (C) Identify the main character on the other side of the vase. Dionysus

Identify the technique used to decorate this vase. Black figure

Plate one (E) Identify the main figure on this plate. Hephaistos (ii) Give ONE way in which this identification can be made. He is riding a donkey due to his crippled legs

Plate 1 (F) (i) Identify the figure on the other side of this vase. Dionysus the God of wine

Plate 1 (F) (ii) Describe in detail what the TWO characters are doing and under what circumstances. Escorted by Dionysos and his entourage of satyrs and maenads, Hephaistos returned to Mount Olympus in triumph. Hephasistos was cast out of Olympus by his mother Hera due to his ugliness. He was crippled in the fall, in revenge he sent Hera a magic throne which imprisoned her. Dionysus was sent to persude Hephasistos to release Hera. Dionysus got him drunk and brought him back to Olympus in a merry procession. As a reward Dionysus was allowed to join the Olympian gods

Plate 1 (G)Discuss the composition of the scene on this side of the vase. You should make at least THREE detailed points and give evidence to support your answer. The majority of figures are the same size on a single plane which is emphasized by turned line underneath the feet of all figures. One decorative band; the same band extends around the entire vase without a break like the wedding of Peleus and Thetis on the shoulder of the Francois vase. Few overlapping figures, the contours of each figure stand out clearly against the background, and the composition becomes a decorative design.

Plate 1 (H) How successfully has the painter depicted the human body? Give a wide range of examples to support your answer. (at least four) The painter has depicted the human body in typical Archaic style, the forms are two dimensional, muscles on satyrs are shown as incised lines. The painter has drawn the figures with no attempt at foreshortening. As is shown by the satyr placed behind Hephaistos’ donkey. This is an attempt to show depth has neglected the requirement for figures to be smaller the further away if the human figure is to be represented realistically. The eyes of the satyrs are represented as frontal yet the satyrs heads are profile. The use of the typical Archaic style frontal eye represents an unsuccessful depiction of the human body. Lydos has successfully shown humans in a variety of poses that attempt to depict movement. He shows satyrs with one foot lifted in mid stride. Lydos successfully communicates the mood of the scene but is limited in his ability to show the effects of twisting on the human torso. The satyr standing behind Hephaistos’ donkey is depicted in a three quarter pose with chest frontal. An sloping incised line at the waist of the satyr attempts to show a twisting action.
