ArcMap: Geoprocessing RG620 June 02, 2015 How to extract a subset of spatial features from a map using attribute or spatial queries. How to aggregate polygons to a larger polygons and how to append two or more layers into a single layer.
Tutorial 8-1: Use Data Queries to Extract Features Open Tutorial 8-1.mxd Select by attribute: Layer: NYBoroughs Field = “NAME” “NAME”=‘Manhattan’ Apply and Close See selected feature and convert it to feature class ‘Manhattan’ Add ‘Manhattan’ to map New York City Metropolitan area.
Make ‘NYBoroughs’ the only selectable layer Extract ‘Brooklyn’ and make it a feature class Similarly create ‘Queens’, ‘Bronx’ and ‘Staten Island’ layers Save map
Tutorial 8-2: Clip Features Use the select by location dialog box Selection method=Select feature from Target layer = NYMetroRoads Source Layer = Manhattan Special selection method: Target layer(s) features intersect the source layer features Apply, OK Examine selected feature and convert to feature class named ‘ManhattanRoads’ OK and click ‘yes’ to add the layer to the map Turn off NYMetroRoads layer and examine newly created layer
Clip Streets Click Geoprocessing, Clip Clip Dialogue Box Input Feature = NYMetroRoads Clip Feature = Manhattan Save output as ClippedManhattanRoads
Your Turn!!! Clip the NYMetroRoads layer to the Bronx Borough Save the output as ClippedBronxRoads
Tutorial 8-3: Dissolve Feature Open Tutorial8-3.mxd Save map in MyExercise folder Open attribute table of ‘NY Metro ZIPs’ We have to aggregate ZIP Codes into POs = Post office names Pos have different boundaries than Boroughs.
Dissolve ZIP Codes Geoprocessing, Dissolve Disslove Dialog box Input Feature = NY Metro ZIPs Save output as DissolvedNYPOs Dissolve Field = PO_Namr Statistics = POP2003 Statistics Type = SUM
Tutorial 8-4: Merge Features To merge 2 or more separate but adjacent layers Open Tutorial8-4.mxd Save in MyExercise folder Merge several feature layers into one feature layer Click Geoprocessing, Merge In Input Datasets select all five layers Save output feature as NewYorkWaters
Tutorial 8-5: Intersect Layers Create new feature class from all the features of 2 inputs Open Tutorial8-5.mxd Save in MyExercise folder Open attribute tables of both layers and examine data Intersect feature layer Click Geoprocessing, Intersect Input Feature = chose both layers Save output as RoadsWaterIntersection Output Type = Line OK
Tutorial 8-6: Union Layers Combines geometry and attributes of 2 input polygon layes to generate a new output polygon layer Open Tutorial8-6.mxd Save in MyExercise folder Click Geoprocessing, Union Select both layers OK Note: Population data is not apportioned across smaller polygons
