Fast Router Discovery with RA Caching draft-jinchoi-dna-frd-00.txt JinHyeock Choi & DongYun Shin Presenter: Greg Daley

Fast Router Discovery DNA Goal: Get RA fast Can send RA immediately on ‘Link UP’ Where L2 Access Points are able to identify that users need RA information Resend recently cached RA at L2 Requires Link-UP on AP only, not on hosts Doesn’t modify packet formats

RA Caching Features Fastest possible RA reception No random delay before response Preserves Router Advertisement Doesn’t break SEND Only caches Unsolicited RAs Optionally MAC unicast to host Avoids problems with un-acked multicast

Potential issues/Extensions Router/Option lifetimes embedded in RAs Perhaps require caching only fresh information Explicit indication of cacheability Preferentially cache ‘Good’ RAs Triggered RS may contend with cached RA Potentially MAC/load dependent. Existing MAC Queues on AccessPoints

Summary Stand-alone solution Doesn’t modify L3 packets/protocols Has interaction with L2 Fastest RA reception Two implementations (Samsung/Monash)

Interest? Some engineering work to do. Provides an alternative DNA solution suitable for some environments Document as Experimental ? WG item or individual RFC? Review and discussion suggested at WG mailing list in either case
