Review of Measurement and the Metric System What is a measurement? When you measure, you compare an unknown value with a known value. How much do you weigh? 120 pounds (55kg) How hot is it outside? 71 F (22°C) How far away is the store? 1 mile (1.6 km) How much soda is left? ½ gallon (2 Liters)

Why do we need a STANDARD UNIT of measure in Science? There are so many different units of measurement in the world… Americans measure in feet and inches… Canadians measure in meters… A horse race is measured in furlongs… Sailors travel distances in leagues… And that’s just measuring distance!

If you think that’s complicated… An American gallon is smaller than a Canadian gallon! We all know a TON weighs a lot, but: - a U.S. short ton weighs 2000 pounds - a U.S. long ton weighs 2,240 pounds - a nautical ton equals 100 cubic feet - a freight ton equals 40 cubic feet…

So, what’s the solution? A STANDARD MEASUREMENT SYSTEM In science, we use the Metric System as the International System of Units (SI). This standard system of measurement allows scientists to compare data and communicate with each other about results.

Making a foldable Use pg. 14 – 18 in your text book to fill in the information on your foldable: For each type of measurement (Mass, Length, Volume, and Temperature): - Give the definition - What unit is it measured in? - What is the symbol for the unit? - What equipment do we use to measure it? - Give some everyday examples!

X Mass Mass = the amount of matter (stuff) an object contains. Unit = Grams (g) pounds Mass is measured with a balance. Examples: 1 large paperclip = 1 g A wooden baseball bat = 1 kg (1000 g) X

X X Length or Distance Length = the distance from 1 point to another Unit = meter (m) feet and inches Length is measured with a ruler. Examples: A Track = 400 m A regular ruler = 30 cm (0.3 m) Floor to the Doorknob = 1 m X X

X X Liquid Volume Volume = the amount of space something takes up. Unit = Liters (L) gallons ounces Liquid Volume is measured with a graduated cylinder. Examples: Large Bottle of Soda = 2 L Can of Soda = 355 mL (0.355 L) X X

X Temperature Temperature = how hot or cold something is. Unit = degrees Celsius (°C) Fahrenheit Temperature is measured with a thermometer. Examples: Water freezes at 0°C. A very hot day is 30°C. Water boils at 100°C. X
