ASSEMBLY AND DETAIL DRAWING

Assembly and detail drawings There are several different types of engineering drawings: Detail drawings (single part drawing) Assembly drawing Collective part drawing Combined detail and assembly drawing Exploded drawing assembly

Detail drawings Used as the main reference in the manufacture of individual components Should give complete detailed information to manufacture the component Should completely define shape and size Include all dimensions and tolerances Should include information related to material, treatment, surface finish, inspection required.

Detail drawing

Assembly drawing Used to show how a number of components are fitted together to make a complete product unit Will have min. info. such as overall size Each individual components is referenced by a number in a circle (balloon reference), and a leader pointing to it Parts list table is indicated on the drawing

Assembly drawing

Collective part drawings Alternative to single part drawing Shows an item with all dimensions, but those dimension/s which vary will be given a letter and, by reference to a table, the size/s and the part number can be obtained E.g. rivets or bolts The items have the same form but dimensions may vary

Collective part drawings

Combined detail & assembly drawing A combination of detailed and assembly drawing Used to show each items and the assembly on one drawing sheet Only suitable for small products, and simple assembly

Combined detail & assembly drawing

Exploded assembly drawing A pictorial drawing showing all components in a 3D form in their correct position for assembly Useful in DIY kit and giving information to not technically trained people
