Thesis Statements! YEAH!!

What is a thesis statement? Sentence or two in your text that contains the focus of your essay and tells your reader what the essay is going to be about

Must… Go in the introductory paragraph. Make an argument. Think of it as a road map to argument you will develop in the paper Answers the "what" question (what is the argument?) and it gives the reader a clue as to the "why" question (why is this argument the most persuasive?).

Must… Thesis statements must make a claim or argument, they are not statements of fact Not merely a statement of opinions

Getting Started… Make sure you understand what the question is, or what the topic is. Answer the question! Address all the parts of the question or topic. Check that your thesis is not too general or too broad. Include just enough information to guide the shaping of your essay without constricting it too much.

Examples… In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain develops a contrast between life on the river and life on the shore. Through its contrasting river and shore scenes, Twain’s Huckleberry Finn suggests that to find the true expression of American democratic ideals, one must leave ‘civilized’ society and go back to nature. Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn is a great American novel.

Is your thesis well written? Do I answer the question? Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? Is my thesis statement specific enough? Does my thesis pass the "So what?" test? Does my essay support my thesis specifically and without wandering? Does my thesis pass the "how and why?" test?

Summary… It makes a clear and specific statement. It indicates the direction of your thoughts. It sets a stage. It provides structure. It is supported by the body paragraphs.
