Making an Ethernet Cable Bury College

Today’s Lesson Objectives Understand how media is used in networking Identify networking devices Activities Wire a straight-through (patch cable) cable to be used to connect computers, printers and other network client devices to the router switch or hub (the host device in this instance). Look at networking devices – switch, router, hub

Ethernet is used to create a WIRED network Straight-through cables are used to link computers to devices Crossover cables are used to link two computers together They consist of cat 5e (category 5e) and an RJ-45 plug Video

Questions What type of network is Ethernet used for? What other media can be used to transfer data across a network? Which do you think is faster? Why?

Types of media Type of media Type of network Bandwidth Ethernet LAN 10 to 1000 Mbps Fibre Optic LAN , MAN and WAN 100 Mbps to 100 Gbps Wireless 54 Mbps Microwave MAN, WAN Coaxial LAN – ring topology 10 to 100 Mbps Satellite WAN 1 Gbps

Networking Devices Switch – used to link many computers together in a LAN Router – used to connect two networks together Network Interface Card – every node on a network must have one
