Ernest Shackleton

Ernest Shackleton was born on February 15, 1874, in the county of Kildare, Ireland. He was home-schooled until age 11. He was said to not like school, but still have a positive attitude. Despite his fathers want for him to become a doctor, in 1898 he joined the merchant navy. In 1901 he was sent with Robert Falcon Scott to the south pole on the ship Discovery. He then led his own expedition in 1908.

In 1914 Shackleton made his most famous expedition In 1914 Shackleton made his most famous expedition. The aim of the expedition was to cross Antarctica on foot, but the ship, called Endurance, got stuck in ice and sank. Luckily, the crew evacuated and split into three groups, each in one life-boat. They ended up at Elephant Island. Shackleton and five crew members then went and found help at a Whaling station on the island of South Georgia. Not one man died. Elephant Island Endurance stuck in ice

On his forth exhibition, Shackleton was trying to circumnavigate Antarctica. He got very sick, but though his crew suggested to, he would not see a doctor, let alone turn back. One of his crew members was trying to do just that when Shackleton interrupted, "You're always wanting me to give up things, what is it I ought to give up?" He died a few minutes later. He was buried on the island of South Georgia. Shackleton’s Grave
