Green = Countries that use the metric system Burma Liberia Green = Countries that use the metric system Gray = Countries that do not use the metric system

What is the metric system? The metric system is also called the International System of Units (SI). The base units of measurement in the SI system are: length – meter (m) mass – gram (g) Volume – liter (L) time – second (s) temperature – kelvin (K) (but we will use Celsius (°C) in this class)

Tools for measuring length Meter stick, ruler

Tools for measuring Mass Scale, balance

Tools for measuring volume Graduated cylinder, beaker, pipette

What is the metric system? The metric system is based on multiples of 10 and all converting in the metric system can be done by multiplying or dividing by multiples of 10, (10, 100, 1000, etc.) The meter, gram, liter, second, & kelvin can all be made larger or smaller by adding prefixes to each base unit.

Let’s Watch a Brain Pop: Metric Units

Ladder Method 1st – Determine your starting point. KILO 1000 Units HECTO 100 Units DEKA 10 Units DECI 0.1 Unit Meters Liters Grams CENTI 0.01 Unit MILLI 0.001 Unit How do you use the “ladder” method? 1st – Determine your starting point. 2nd – Count the “jumps” to your ending point. 3rd – Move the decimal the same number of jumps in the same direction.

Example: 4 km = _________ m Ladder Method 1 2 3 KILO 1000 Units HECTO 100 Units DEKA 10 Units DECI 0.1 Unit Meters Liters Grams CENTI 0.01 Unit MILLI 0.001 Unit 4000 Example: 4 km = _________ m Where is the decimal?

Example: 55 mL = _________ L Ladder Method KILO 1000 Units HECTO 100 Units 3 DEKA 10 Units 2 1 DECI 0.1 Unit Meters Liters Grams CENTI 0.01 Unit MILLI 0.001 Unit 0.055 Example: 55 mL = _________ L
