Presentation transcript:

Jonah 3 [1]Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time:[2]"Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you."[3]Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very important city-a visit required three days.[4]On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: "Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned."[5]The Ninevites believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

6]When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.[7]Then he issued a proclamation in Nineveh: "By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let any man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink.[8]But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence.[9]Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish."[10]When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened.

“Ology” means the study of a subject - sociology, zoology, psychology….. “ology” comes from Logos= word, teaching, study Jonah is full of theology – the study of God. As we study Jonah 3, ask yourself – “what does this chapter teach me about God?”

Jonah 3 – God calls the prophet again. vs. 2 & 3: the same mission: Go to Ninevah, proclaim the Word of God. This time Jonah obeys v. 4: the same message – Judgement is coming! vs. 5-6: the Ninevites believed God’s Word. vs. 7-9: the King led national repentance. Call urgently on God: He may show compassion! v. 10: Forgiveness for repentant sinners.

Theology= words or doctrine, of God. Theology of this book: Theology= words or doctrine, of God. Jonah 114, 29, 34, 310 God is the holy, sovereign judge. He is also the God of compassion Matthew 1240-41: Jesus said – A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was 3 days and 3 nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of man will be 3 days and nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Ninevah will stand up with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.

We too must preach & share this message: Jesus is the crucified and risen saviour. There is forgiveness for all who repent and believe. Judgement is coming! Jesus will return one day, and judge the whole world.
