But we don’t need light pollution! We need light, right? Safety from crime Visibility on roadways Comfort when walking at night Advertising But we don’t need light pollution!

What is light pollution? Glare – light striking your eye Spillover – light that lights up more than it is supposed to Skyglow – light that goes up and makes the sky “glow”

Glare (light in your eyes)

Spillover (light beyond where it should be)

Skyglow light that makes the sky “glow”

Why should I care? Spoils the view of stars Reduces your ability to see in darkness Costs money Wastes energy Confuses and harms wildlife (sea turtles)

These are good lights (lights are shielded and aim down)

Solutions Aim lights downward Use lights that are fully shielded Reduce light output (not so bright)
