Where are we going? Holland—officially known as the Netherlands The Hague—the political capital of the Netherlands Amsterdam—the cultural capital of the Netherlands The Dutch term for the Hague is “den Haag”
What Will We Study There? COMM 331 Argumentation and Debate Organized around the debate topic “The U.S. should join the International Criminal Court.” Two lectures before departure Three classroom lectures when we are there Debate assignments while we are there Time in the Hague is loosely structured Each day will some combination of class lecture or activity, debate assignments, observing at court, visiting a museum, tours and free time.
What Will We Do in Amsterdam Visit major art and historical museums Canal cruise Red light district tour Anne Frank House 2 nice group dinners Free time
What will we do in The Hague? Observe court proceedings at the International Criminal Court and other courts Visit other international institutions Tour Scheveningen Prison Lectures and workshops Hague After Dark Tour Major art museums Visit the beach 5 nice group dinners
Where Else Will We Go? Overnight in Rotterdam Day trip to Delft Optional weekend side trip to location of your choice, such as Paris, London, Brussels, Barcelona or Berlin
Language and Culture Local language is Dutch Most everyone speaks English Friendly people, friendly to Americans Can come off as a bit cold by American standards, but they really are nice The Hague area has 1 million people The Hague is a very international city Weather in the summer will be mostly warm, occasionally chilly and possible rain.
