Broadband ICT Infrastructure: NEPAD ICT PROGRAMME Two Key Components: Broadband ICT Infrastructure NEPAD e-Schools Initiative Broadband ICT Infrastructure: EASSy Cable ICT Connectivity for East and Southern Africa ICT Connectivity for Central, West and Northern Africa

NEPAD e-SCHOOLS SATELLITE NETWORK: Features Purpose: To connect up to 600k African Primary and Secondary Schools to the Internet Space Segment: Leased from Satellite operating companies in bulk Earth Segments: Small antennas located at African Primary and Secondary Schools Operations Centre: To be located at the CSIR Satellite Applications Centre (Hartbeeshoek near Pretoria, South Africa) Network: will be used for e-Governance and e-Health activities : can also be used to connect Universities and research centres

NEPAD e-SCHOOLS SATELLITE NETWORK: Progress RFI sent to Industry in 2004 26 Responses Received from Satellite industry Analysis of responses completed in Jan 2005 Immediate Next Steps To design Network and Operations Centre Planned Date of Operation End 2006/ Early 2007
