When People Do What is Right in Their Own Eyes - Judges Social mores establish how people get along with each other in a society What happens when people do what is right in their own eyes? Proverbs 16:25

When People Do What is Right in Their Own Eyes - Judges The period between initial conquest in 1406 B.C. & Samson’s death in 1055 B.C. Purpose: To give a defense of the establishment of the monarchy by showing the utter failure of the theocracy to obey the Lord through the judges

Causes for the Period of the Judges (1:1-3:6) Judges - Outline Causes for the Period of the Judges (1:1-3:6) Cycles of Judges (3:7-16:31) Consequences of Disobeying the Lord (17-21) Sin leads to suffering, repentance leads to deliverance (as warned in Num. 26; Deuteronomy 27-28; Joshua 23-24

The Causes for the Period of Judges Incomplete obedience They were to be utterly destroyed because of their iniquity & abominations (Gen. 15:16; Exod. 23:23f; Leviticus 18:24-27 Deuteronomy 20:17-18) Instead of utterly destroying them as commanded, several tribes put them to forced labor

The Causes for the Period of Judges Idolatry The Lord would no longer drive out the nations, but they would become a test of Israel’s faithfulness (vs. 20-23) Intermarriage (See Deut. 7:3) Intermarriage compounded the incomplete obedience and idolatry

The Cycles of Judges Judges 3:7-16:31 The cycle of judges went from disobedience to idolatry to oppression to repentance to deliverance

Cycles of Judges - Jephthah Judges 10:6-12:7 They did evil again Oppressed for 18 years Jephthah was from Gilead (Gad).

Cycles of Judges - Jephthah Judges 10:6-12:7 He was of questionable character, but he knew Israel’s God given right to the land & would fight He defeated the Ammonites. Ephraim was jealous and fought him and lost resulting in 42,000 needless deaths He judged for 6 years

Cycles of Judges - Samson Judges 13-16 He avenged his eyes & killed more in his death than while alive God is able to accomplish His purpose even through people like Samson

Idolatry: Micah and the Danites Judges 17-18 Micah was a thief and idolater The tribe of Dan were guilty of flagrant idolatry, coveting, stealing and threatening murder The priest was an opportunist, idolater They rejected the law of the Lord so they could do what they wanted

Immorality & Anarchy: Gibeah & the Benjamite Civil War Judges 19-21 A Levite with his concubine stopped in Gibeah in Benjamin The “sons of Belial” wanted “relations” with him – his host gave them the concubine – they abused her to death

Immorality & Anarchy: Gibeah & the Benjamite Civil War Judges 19-21 The Levite sent a piece of her to each of the 12 tribes. 400,000 fighting men gathered to demand justice Benjamin defended the evil men instead of turning them over for justice

Immorality & Anarchy: Gibeah & the Benjamite Civil War Judges 19-21 65,100 men died as a result of the Benjamite Civil war They destroyed Jabesh-gilead to get wives for the remaining Benjaminites They condoned the capture of other women as wives for the remnant

Conclusions Doing what is right in your own eyes results in disobedience to the Lord, idolatry, immorality and anarchy God is merciful and gracious to both forgive and bless those who repent and follow Him

Conclusions People will lie, cheat, covet, steal, squander, neglect, hate, abuse and exploit - even murder - if it will get them what they want We must diligently teach our children about the Lord & His will We must actively seek revival – pray, witness, serve

Don’t be part of the problem Conclusions Don’t be part of the problem Be part of the solution
