Since these patients lack the appropriate immunologic response, early recognition and adequate treatment are crucial. Current guidelines support the administration of IV antibiotics within the first hour of presentation in order to improve the outcome. Our study demonstrated that the overall mortality rate in our institution is comparable to international centers. The initial choice of antibiotics in our institution meets the international guidelines in the majority of patients. Patients classified as severe by the MASCC score have a higher rate of mortality despite adequate treatment. An epidemiologic, prospective study was conducted at the Hematology-Oncology Department at Notre Dame de Secours University hospital from September 2015 until December 2016. All adult patients admitted to the hospital with the diagnosis of febrile neutropenia were included. A statistical analysis was conducted to identify factors related to poor outcome and overall mortality rate. From the 6 patients who died: 5 were classified as severe by the MASCC score and 1 was classified as moderate. However, all of them were treated adequately regarding to antibiotics. In most cases, no germ was identified in cultures which justifies the pursuit of broad spectrum antibiotics. 47% of patients received a second line of antibiotics after persistence of fever. This study was conducted in order to determine the outcome and mortality rate of febrile neutropenia in patients admitted to a university hospital during one year, and to evaluate the accuracy of management.
