Introduction to Mary Shelley and Frankenstein

Mary Shelley Daughter of famous writer William Godwin (wrote about injustice in government) and famous feminist Mary Wollstonecraft. Mary was born five months after her parents married. Her mother died of complications after giving birth. Mary was educated by her father and other famous guest writers in her home (Samuel Coleridge). She met Percy Shelley and proposed marriage after his marriage to his first wife was dissolved. Mary and Percy had a daughter who died from being premature and a son was born a year later. They took a tour of Europe with Mary’s sister and Lord Byron, who had the group write ghost stories for entertainment=Frankenstein began to take shape.

How Frankenstein came to be During the summer of 1816, Lord Byron invited Percy Blysshe Shelley and others to his villa by Lake Geneva. Byron suggested a contest to see who could write the scariest ghost story. Nineteen-year-old Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (who would marry Shelley later after his wife drowned herself) won. The result was Frankenstein, and she was encouraged to have it published. The idea emerged from a dream she had.

Genre Many regard Frankenstein as the first ever science fiction novel. It is also a gothic, horror novel.
