Grading System Lab +Project and Assignment + Midterm Exam 30 % - 40% 30 % - 40% Final Exam 60 % - 70%

Laboratory Work Outline 1- Project: Geometric design of highway. 2- Laboratory experiments. 3- Discussion. (If required).

INTRODUCTION Transportation Movement of persons and goods over space

Transportation Demand People and goods do not move for the sake of movement, but to fulfill certain needs. Mobility must be provided efficiently, by balancing different society needs (cost, convenience, safety, environment protection).

Definition Spot speed (سرعة لحظية) Speed: Rate of motion(mph, km/hr). There are three types of speed: Spot speed (سرعة لحظية) It is the instantaneous speed of a vehicle at a specific location. Running speed The average speed maintained over a given route while the vehicle is in motion. Average Journey Speed Distance traveled divided by the total time taken to complete the distance.

Definition Volume, Flow: The total number of vehicles that pass over a given point of high way during specific time interval. Rate of flow: the equivalent hourly rate at which vehicles pass over a given point of highway during given time period less than 1hour, usually 15min

Definition Peak hour factor (PHF): the ratio of total hourly volume to the maximum 15-minute rate of flow within the hour. PHF (minimum) = 0.25 ( V = Vكل المركبات تمر في ربع ساعة 15) PHF (maximum) = 1 ( V=4V15 المركبات موزعة علي الأرباع بالتساوي ( Steady flow.

Number of vehicle (veh) Example: The following traffic counts were made during an hour-long study period: Answer: The hourly volume = 1000+1200+1100+1000 = 4300 veh The rates of low = [ No. of veh.] / [time(in hours)] Time period Number of vehicle (veh) 5:00 –5:15 1000 5:15 –5:30 1200 5:30 –5:45 1100 5:45 –6:00 Time period Number of vehicle (veh) Rate of flow vph 5:00 –5:15 1000 1000/0.25 = 4000 5:15 –5:30 1200 1200/0.25 = 4800 5:30 –5:45 1100 1100/0.25 = 4400 5:45 –6:00

Definition Density, concentration: (K,D): the number of vehicles occupying a given length of highway at a given instant. (Veh/km). عدد السيارات الموجودة في طول معين من الشارع في لحظة معينة

LOS Level of Service: LOS is a qualitative measure that describes operational conditions within a traffic stream and their perception by drivers or / and passengers. Level of service has six levels, the first one is A, and the worst one is F.

ADT VS AADT ADT (average daily traffic): the average of 24hour counts collected over a number of days greater than 1day and less than 1-year مجموع السيارات خلال عدة أيام أقل من سنة / عدد هذه الأيام AADT (average annual daily traffic): the average of 24-hour counts collected over a year. It is used to: 1- Study The accidents and obstacles. 2- Design and evaluation of highway. 3- Study the benefits that may come from the road.
