Parts of the Atom PSSA: 3.4.7.A/S8.C.1.1

Objective: TLW compare the three parts of the atom.

MI #1: Protons Location – Nucleus Charge – Positive (+) Mass – 1 amu

MI #2: Neutrons Location – Nucleus Charge – Neutral Mass – 1 amu

MI #3: Electrons Location – Electron Cloud Charge – Negative (-) Mass - .00054 amu

So What…? Real Life Application Understanding the parts of the atom allows us to understand chemical bonding, chemical reactions, and nuclear reactions.

MI #1: Atomic Numbers The atomic number of an atom is the number of protons in its nucleus. All atoms of the same element have the same atomic number (hydrogen = 1, helium = 2, etc.) Neutral atoms will have the same number of electrons as protons.

MI #2: Isotopes Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons. Isotopes have the same atomic number, but the number of neutrons differs. Isotopes of the same element share most of the same chemical and physical properties, however, some may be unstable (radioactive) and will change (decay) over time.

MI #3: Mass Numbers The mass number is the sum of the protons and the neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. Mass Number - Atomic Number = Number of Neutrons

So What…? Real Life Application Understanding atomic numbers, mass numbers, and isotopes allows us to compare elements and to understand chemical bonding, chemical reactions, and nuclear reactions.
