Antonyms

Objectives -Students will be able to generate a definition for the term antonym. -Students will be able to produce or match an antonym for a given word. -Students will be able to use a dictionary or thesaurus to look up antonyms of a given word.

What is an Antonym? An antonym is a word that has the OPPOSITE meaning of another word. Example: Light and Dark

Examples cold and hot easy and hard fast and slow day and night right and left

Now it’s YOUR turn! 1. Read the following sentences. 2. Replace the underlined word with an antonym of that word.

Sentence 1: The student was silent during class.

Sentence 2: The room was very bright.

Sentence 3: The old television was unique.

Sentence 4: The towel was very wet.
