Purpose/Methods Walton Pressure Scale A convenience sample was drawn from the general population of Hematology/Oncology/BMT children and adolescents. Subjects were asked to complete a self-report questionnaire electronically (via tablet) before and immediately following a relaxing massage treatment. Survey responses were reviewed from 33 patients (34% male) ages 6 to 18. Walton Pressure Scale

Results The scale used for these items was a 0-100 visual analog scale (anchored by “Not at all” and “Extremely”). These changes were statistically significant (p<.05), indicating reliable reductions in pain and negative affect with reliable increases in positive affect (cheerfulness and calmness). Ninety-four percent of patients reported massage as being helpful. Almost all patients (97%) reported being at least somewhat likely to request massage again in the future and to recommend massage to other patients like themselves.

Conclusions/Discussion Working in conjunction with medical providers, therapeutic, relaxing massage can be utilized as an effective pain management treatment for patients with Sickle-Cell Disease. Future studies Larger sample size Compare massage with other therapies and relaxation techniques (guided imagery, relaxing music, yoga, hypnosis, etc.) Outpatient vs. Inpatient
