SEXUAL HARASSMENT

There are 2 types of Sexual Harassment 1. Economic Sexual Harassment (has a financial impact on the associate) 2. Hostile Environment Sexual harassment (creates an uncomfortable working environment) There are 2 types of Sexual Harassment

Definition of Sexual Harassment Sexual harassment includes unwanted sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, visual, verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature when: Submitting to the conduct is made a term of condition of employment Submitting to or rejecting the conduct is used as a basis for employment decisions affecting the associate in a financial way (economic harassment) Such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an associate’s work performance, or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment (hostile environment harassment) Definition of Sexual Harassment

Examples of Sexual Harassment Offering employment benefits, such as a raise, promotion, or good performance review, in exchange for sexual favors Unwanted sexual advances or propositions Making or carrying out threats, such as a demotion, discharge failure to promote, or a poor performance review after a negative response to sexual advances Verbal abuse of a sexual nature, graphic verbal statements, commenting about an associate’s body, sexually degrading words to describe an individual, suggestive or obscene letters, notes, or invitations Examples of Sexual Harassment

Examples of Sexual Harassment, cont’d Visual Conduct: making sexual gestures, displaying sexually suggestive objects, pictures, cartoons, or posters Verbal Conduct: making or using derogatory comments, disparaging or abusive words and phrases, sexually explicit jokes, and comments about an associate’s body or dress, asking personal questions about an associate’s sex life, discussing your sex life Physical Conduct: leering, making sexual gestures, touching, assaulting, impeding, or blocking movements Examples of Sexual Harassment, cont’d

Scope of Prohibited Sexual Harassment Centura does not tolerate men sexually harassing other men or women, and women sexually harassing men or other women Centura does not tolerate sexual harassment based on stereotypical beliefs that employees of a certain gender should act a certain way; e.g. certain females are too masculine, or certain men are too effeminate Scope of Prohibited Sexual Harassment

Who is Covered by Centura’s Policy? Centura does not tolerate harassment against associates by other associates, supervisors, managers, patients, visitors, vendors, contractors, or any other person doing business with or for Centura Who is Covered by Centura’s Policy?

Other Types of Prohibited Harassment Centura does not tolerate threats, jokes, derogatory comments, abusive statements, slurs, cartoons etc. when they are based on an associate’s: Race Color National origin/ancestry Religion/Creed Gender Sexual orientation Pregnancy Disability Age Veteran or military status Marital status Any category protected by Law Other Types of Prohibited Harassment

Examples of Other Prohibited Harassment Telling derogatory jokes Writing or forwarding e-mails with offensive ethnic jokes Telling a 55-year old employee that he/she is too old to work and it is time to retire Mocking a person with a disability Circulating racist cartoons Examples of Other Prohibited Harassment

Centura Policy and the Law Prohibit Retaliation Retaliation means taking negative action against or punishing an associate because the associate complained of harassment or was a witness in an investigation or legal proceeding. Examples of Possible Retaliation: Firing, demoting, or suspending an associate because he or she complained of harassment. Denying a raise or promotion to an associate because he or she was a witness in an investigation by the Human Resources Manager. Centura Policy and the Law Prohibit Retaliation

Understand that people come from different backgrounds and appreciate those differences. Treat others as you want to be treated. Treat others with dignity and respect. Do not say or do anything that you would not want a 10-year old child or grandmother to hear. Do not say or do anything that you would not want to see in the headlines. Report harassment and retaliation immediately. Your Resonsibilites

Other Important Information You are never required to report harassment to the perpetrator. For example, if you are being harassed by your supervisor, you are never required to complain to him or her. There are other places to make complaints, such as the HR department or the Integrity Helpline. You are never required to confront a harasser and tell him or her that the conduct is making you uncomfortable. However, you may advise the harasser to stop the conduct, if you feel comfortable doing so. You should report harassment if you observe it happening to others. Victims of harassment are required to report it. Harassment may be reported to the associate’s supervisor, HR manager, or other managers and supervisors or places (such as the Integrity Helpline) identified in the policy.
