Questions/Clarifications Sections 7, 8, 12

FVSPS Sail Course Wind Sail Book, Section 9

Section 9, Wind, Overview Two Separate Topics: - Weather (pp. 69-72) - Analysis of Wind and Boat Movement (pp. 72-79)

Weather - Recommendation: Take USPS Weather Course - Sea Breeze, Land Breeze (pp. 69-72) - Beaufort Wind Scale (p. 71)

Analysis of Wind and Boat Movement - True Wind - Boat Wind - Apparent Wind

True vs. Apparent Wind - Simple Situations: Directions of True Wind and Apparent Wind Parallel - Not Parallel Situations: Analyze with Trigonometry, Diagrams - Sail Book, pp. 74-75

True vs. Apparent Wind: Some Implications - Why a Beam Reach takes us Downwind (Fig. 9-9/10, p. 75) - Why When We Tack we Tack Further than we Expect (Fig. 9-8, p. 74)

Apparent Wind: Decompose into Forward and Sideways Components - Use Triangle Diagrams (Fig. 9-12, p. 76) - Why Boats heel most on a Close Haul (p. 77) - Implications for Sail Trim (Fig. 9-15, p. 78)

Sail Trim: Goal, Rules of Thumb - Want to Keep Sail at Same Angle of Attack when in Pull Mode (Fig. 9-15, p. 78; Fig. 10-3, p. 84) - “When in doubt, let it out” (Summary, p. 79, end)

FVSPS Sail Course Sail Shape Sail Book, Section 10

Sail Shape, Basic Concepts Angle of Attack Laminar Flow over Sail Using Telltales to Assess Angle of Attack, Whether Air Flow is Laminar

Sail Shape, Major Adjustments Angle of Attack: Sheets/Helm Adjustment Draft: mainsail outhaul, sheets, halyards, cunningham Basic Rule: Flatten Sail to De-Power (in Pull Mode)

Sail Shape, Twist Adjustments Headsail: Placement of Genoa Car Mainsail: Boomvang, Traveller, Sheet

Sail Shape: Understanding Twist Wind Gradient Effect of Stronger True Wind on Apparent Wind Need for Sail Twist to Keep Same Angle of Attack

Understanding Twist: Sail Book Errors P. 86, par. 16 P. 86, par. 17
