Using Intercepts

Using Intercepts y-intercept--the y-coordinate of the point where the graph intersects the y-axis. The x-coordinate of this point is always 0. x-intercept-the x-coordinate of the point where the graph intersects the x-axis. The y-coordinate of this point is always 0.

Find the x and y intercepts of… 3x – 2y = 12 To find the x-intercept: replace y with 0 and solve for x. 3x – 2(0) = 12 3x = 12 x = 4 (4, 0)

3x – 2y = 12 To find the y-intercept, replace the x with 0. (0, -6)

Now graph those two points (4, 0) (0, -6)

Give the x and y intercepts… Trish can run the 200 m dash in 25 s. The function f(x) = 200 – 8x gives the distance remaining to be run after x seconds. Graph this function and find the intercepts. What does each intercept represent? 5x – 2y = 10

Give the x and y intercepts… Trish can run the 200 m dash in 25 s. The function f(x) = 200 – 8x gives the distance remaining to be run after x seconds. Graph this function and find the intercepts. What does each intercept represent? x int = 25 y int = 200 x intercept means in 8 seconds the race is over y intercept means in 0 seconds there are 200 m to run x int = -2, y int = 1 5x – 2y = 10 x int = 2, y int = -5
