Oedipus Rex came to Thebes, married HIS MOTHER, and brought a plague on the people. Of course this is shameful. Accident or not he still slept with his mom. Who would be proud to go to or come from a place whose citizens had not only allowed this, but encouraged it, a place where this happened and then the Queen committed suicide and the King was exiled. It is absolutely shameful, and it is shame that Oedipus bought to these people. If he had stayed home then none of that would have happened and the original King would most likely still be alive. Sure you can say that he saved the people from the plagues but who wouldn’t rather die from a plague then die from shame. Anti-Strophe (15 points) I completely disagree with this statement. Oedipus is the only reason the people of Thebes are still alive. During his reign as king, Oedipus saved them from two plagues. If he hadn’t have then they all would’ve died. He showed up at a time when their King obviously hadn’t helped them. He was strong enough to fight of the original King and his entourage, and win. He may have married his mother, but this was completely unbeknownst to him. As far as he knew he was doing every right. You know that he is a moral man because he ran away from home so that he wouldn’t marry his mother. If anything, Oedipus Rex brought honor to his kingdom. He kept his promise of punishing the “culprit” and he owned up to a mistake he didn’t even know he made. That is not something to be ashamed of.
