Narrative Structure Frame Narrative of The Canterbury Tales

At the Tabard Inn in Southwark, near London, the narrator joins a company of twenty-nine pilgrims.

They are all traveling to the shrine of the martyr Saint Thomas Becket in the town of Canterbury.

The pilgrims come from diverse backgrounds The pilgrims come from diverse backgrounds. They include a Knight, Monk, Merchant, Carpenter, Wife, Pardoner, and Tapestry-Weaver, among others.

The pilgrims already enjoy telling each other stories The pilgrims already enjoy telling each other stories. The host suggests that each pilgrim will tell a story, in a makeshift competition. Whomever he judges to be the best storyteller will be the winner and receive a meal at the tavern when they return from the trip.
