Sigma Sigma Phi Sigma Chapter 2017 Annual Report Presented by: Elizabeth Simmons, Sigma Chapter President

Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine Sigma Chapter is represented at the University of Pikeville- Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. UP-KYCOM is the 19th school of osteopathic medicine in the country.

Medicine in the Mountains Situated in the heart of Eastern Kentucky Appalachian Mountains, UP-KYCOM is dedicated to producing primary care physicians who will serve this region and surrounding rural areas.

Pikeville, Kentucky Developments Challenges KYCOM ranked 7th in rural medicine of all medical schools (U.S. News & World Report’s 2018 edition of Best Graduate Schools); highest ranked D.O. medical school in rural medicine and family medicine KYCOM ranked 12th in family medicine; ranked 2nd in percentage of graduates entering primary care residencies Inaugural class of 2020 Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO) successfully completed its first year KYCOM and KYCO “joint” classes to foster intraprofessional relationships Economic growth in Pikeville is substantial with new restaurants and stores, including Chick-fil-a and Einstein Bagels in UPIKE’s new Health Professsions Education Building, which is open to both students and the public. Isolated in the mountains, region is underserved Population of 7,106 (2016) Poverty, unemployment, Medicaid and uninsured, and mortality are higher than state and national averages Opioid epidemic concerns Overall health concerns (obesity, diabetes) very evident among population Eastern Kentucky Type II Diabetes at 14%, compared to 11% in Kentucky and 9.4% nationally

Giving Back to Community Fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Association brought in $1,216.50 Culminated in October 2016 local event Walk to End Alzheimer’s UP-KYCOM Relay for Life Chair: Kim Rafine, OMS-II Other committee members: Sean Beattie, OMS-II and Olivia Dyer, OMS-II Raised about $400 for American Cancer Society Culminated in June 2017 local event Relay for Life 2nd year SSP members helped conduct Osteopathic Medicine Mock Practical Examinations for first year students Assist COSGP with orientation week events (Fashion Show, Equipment Distribution) Support KYCOM faculty by working graduation

Keeping Members Active and Involved 1st and 2nd years 3rd and 4th years Monthly meetings Participation in all philanthropic events held throughout the semester Service hours reported to our SSP Community Service Chair Minimum of 15 hours per semester Can count service to school as “SSP Hours” (things that do not count as TOUCH Hours) Off campus during this time for clinical rotations Do not require them to participate in monthly meetings, as these are normally held during the lunch hour Required to participate in 20 service hours/SSP hours a year Must be reported to our Community Service Chair before the end of the semester in order to maintain in good standing

Current Projects making community a priority Walk to End Alzheimer’s  September 16th, 2017 Fundraising Chair: Rebecca Oliver Participating in walk, helping with registration, fundraising at the event Raised $1,130 as of August, 2017 Partnership with Diamonds in the Ruff Animal Rescue Organization Helping collect donations and assisting at adoption events Pikeville Haunted Trail Late October – raises funds for the local police and fire department, as well partners with a farm to feed their horses for the winter. Thanksgiving Dinner/Drive Mid-November – host a food drive for local food pantry and host a dinner for KYCOM students and faculty “Shoebox Christmas” Creating gift boxes for families in need over the holidays

Future Projects and Goals Establishing a Big/Little Professional Mentorship within the fraternity Will be between every other class (i.e. Class of 2018 paired with Class of 2020) Offers insights into rotations, residency match, adjusting to professional life for younger classes Keeps older classes connected to the fraternity and to the school Larger presence on UPIKE Campus – give back to the school through leadership Admissions Events More member participation in tutoring, mock osteopathic exams and mock standardized patient encounters for first year students Community outreach to establish relationships and become more involved with various organizations throughout Pikeville More collaboration with other KYCOM clubs and organizations in order to involve more students in service opportunities Many members are club presidents or E-board officers Become more involved with Animal Shelter, Pikeville City Trash Pick-Up
