All Students Career Ready and College Prepared English Language Arts All Students Career Ready and College Prepared

What are the graduation requirements for English? Students must complete four years (eight semesters) of English in 9th-12th grade. *Actually, it’s a kindergarten- 12th grade issue

What is changing in ELA? The Common Core Standards Focus on Informational Text Focus on using evidence from the text/ building an argument and having evidence to support a claim More writing- especially informational More complex texts

Speaking and Listening Standards Prepare for and participate effectively in conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas Evaluate a speaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and communicative tasks

Why are things changing? ACT study (2006) shows the major distinguishing factor determining if a student is ready for college: facility with reading complex texts School books and reading demands K-12 have become easier…college books, college reading, and technical manuals have not gotten easier 20% of college freshman required remedial reading- and 75% of surveyed students who dropped out of college report reading was a major contributing factor

What does it mean to be “college and career ready in literacy?” Read the Common Core document. Think about how these descriptions apply to your work in elementary, middle, or high school.

In small groups, discuss the role of the counselor in achieving the goal of “all students career ready and college prepared.” Consider your work with parents, students, and teachers. Share out with large group.
