Probing Quantum Flows in Deformed Pygmy Dipole Modes Workshop on Advances in theoretical nuclear physics, June 09-2017, KTH, Stockholm Probing Quantum Flows in Deformed Pygmy Dipole Modes Junchen Pei (peij@pku.edu.cn) School of Physics, Peking University

The drip-line physics Halo--extended dilute surface, soft modes… Dripline of Oxygen: 24O RIKEN: (Dec 2014 Expt with 48Ca) 33F(very likely unbound), 36Ne(not found), 39Na(1 event) Nature 449, 1022(25 Oct 2007). Halo--extended dilute surface, soft modes… Nuclear astrophysical interests Explain few-body physics by many-body methods Extrapolate, verify and improve theoretical modes

Collective excitations of weakly bound nuclei Novel relative motion between halo/skin and core: collective or non-collective? Enhance astrophysical neutron capture rates Related to continuum, neutron halo, deformation, EOS, symmetry energy, incompressibility… Giant resonance Pygmy modes Extensive experiments in less exotic nuclei 68Ni (T. Oishi, et.al, Phys.Rev. C 93, 034329 (2016)) D. Rossi et al., PRL 111 (2013) 242503

Nature of the deformed PDR Various deformed halos---shape decoupling---How to detect? The flow pattern of PDR in weakly bound nuclei (a long-standing question) Comparative experimental study of splittings in K=0 and K=1 modes in GDR and PDR T. Misu, W. Nazarewicz, S. Aberg, Nucl. Phys. A 614, 44(1997) S.G. Zhou et al., PRC 2010; J.C.Pei et al., PRC 2013 Can be studied directly by transition currents in deformed QRPA Deformed QRPA is needed even for spherical nuclei because internal motions is prohibited due to symmetry V.O. Nesterenko, J. Kvasil, A. Repko, W. Kleinig, P.-G. Reinhard, arXiv:1602.03326

Methods: Deformed continuum FAM-QRPA Pairing Deformation Collective Excitation Halo A numerical challenge for deformed continuum QRPA Standard QRPA in the matrix form is extremely expensive for deformed nuclei, even more to include continuum configuration (a huge matrix) Finite-Amplitude-Methods-QRPA provides alternative way solving QRPA equation iteratively rather than diagonalization (FAM-RPA, T. Nakatsukasa, PRC, 2007) (see also M. Kortelainen’s talk)

Continuum-DFT Continuum is important in weakly bound nuclei and low-lying states Weakly-bound s.p. states coupled with continuum: resonances Near-threshold non-resonant continuum is important for halos Enhance stability; enhance halo features; enhance coherent collectivity Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov q.p spectrum

Continuum discretization in lattice Non-resonant continuum checked with superfluid Thomas-Fermi Estimate HFB resonance widths with box stabilization method Pei, Kruppa, Nazarewicz, PRC, 2011 Large coordinate-spaces result in a vast number of continuum states and provides good resolutions for resonances and continuum (proportional L3)

Ground-state: deformed halos Self-consistent calculations: SLy4 force + density dependent pairing Deformed coordinate space v.s. Harmonic Oscillator basis New exotic “egg”-like halo structure predicted; large coordinate space is essential J.P., Y.N. Zhang, F.R. Xu, PRC (R) 87, 051302(2013) 38Ne, (a) neutron density; (b) n pairing density Mainly contributed by near-threshold continuum

Implementation in coordinate-space HFB-AX output: axial-deformed wavefunctions (10 GB) and energies B-spline lattice transformed to Gauss-Legendre lattice FAM-QRPA procedure: 1. Construct full transition densities (including time-odd terms):

Implementation in coordinate-space 2. Calculate H20, H02 (including time-odd terms), F20, etc 3. Calculate X, Y; and do Broyden iterations on X, Y. (30 iterations kept) 4. Finally calculate the strength Combined MPI+OpenMP parallel calculations in TH-1A,TH-2 supercomputers

40Mg: shape coexistence Last Mg isotope, interests of spectroscopy Prolate-oblate coexistence in 40Mg (N=28) Deformed K-splitting Gogny-HFB J. Terasaki, et al. K=0 Soft dipole K=1 Evolution from oblate 42Si to prolate 40Mg A good case to probe excitations based on different shapes We study the isovector dipole resonances as related to photoabsorption, without spurious states.

Deformed halos: different Skyrme interactions Reasonable extended-SLy4 42Mg and 39Na have not been found yet Has been refitted with higher-order density dependence X. Y. Xiong, J. C. Pei, and W. J. Chen Phys. Rev. C 93, 024311 (2016)

Different pairing interactions at driplines Pairing and continuum are important for low energy excitations increase collectivity and change the flow pattern significantly Density dependent pairing: from ab initio and cold Fermi gas? We adopts a suitable pairing for both stable and dripline nuclei

core-halo density—contour lines There is no evident core-halo decoupling, however…..

Strength functions Box size dependence: R=12 fm Box size dependence: Large box is needed for smooth the resonances, otherwise, PDR is fragmented.
