5 Themes of Geography MR. HELP M: Movement R: Region H: Human E: Environment Interaction L: Location P: Place

How are people, goods, and ideas moved from one place to another? Movement How are people, goods, and ideas moved from one place to another? Movement of people: How people move around Ex: immigration, transportation – cars, planes, trains, etc. Movement of goods: How goods and products go from one place to the other Ex: export, import, oceans, seas, planes, boats, trains, roads, etc. Movement of ideas: How ideas and information spreads Ex: T.V., Internet, Magazines, FaceBook, Radio, etc.

Human Environment Interaction How do people interact with their environment and how does the environment is affected by people? People . . . Adapt to Their Environment – we change what we do to live in the environment Wear fur coats in cold area, etc. Modify Their Environment – we make or build things to live in the environment Ex: build bridges, cut down trees for houses, air conditioner, heaters, igloos Depend on Their Environment – we need things from the environment EX: land for food, water for fish, land and water for transportation (import, export, migration), etc. http://www.fotosearch.com/comp/corbis/DGT119/BAG0017.jpg

Human Environment Interaction We adapt… We adapt… We Modify… We adapt… We Depend…

Location Where is It? Two Types of Location 1) Absolute –Uses Exact location on earth – Uses latitude and longitude – Ex: Wyoming is 48 north 62 west 2) Relative – Uses Directions, Landmarks, Distance, Time – Ex: Ashley’s house is 2 miles from the Big Chicken, east of Walmart

1) Absolute Location Latitude and longitude A specific place on the Earth’s surface Uses a grid system A global address

Georgia Absolute Location Atlanta Thomasville 33° 44' 56" N / 84° 23' 17" W Thomasville 30° 50' 11" N / 83° 58' 44" W

Positioning on the Earth’s Surface Equator Latitude 0o Latitude: (90oN to 90oS) North Pole South Pole Prime Meridian 0o Longitude Longitude: (180oE to 180oW) Longitude 30o East Eastern Hemisphere – East of the Prime Meridian Latitude East to West Western Hemisphere – West of the Prime Meridian Northern Hemisphere – Above the Equator Southern Hemisphere – Above the Equator Longitude North to South

Find the states Latitude and Longitude

2) Relative Location Where a place is in relation to another place Uses directional words to describe Cardinal and intermediate directions, landmarks,

Georgia’s Relative Location Georgia is bordered by ___________ on the south. Georgia is bordered by Alabama on the ____________ Georgia is bordered by Tennessee on the ______________. The _______________ forms Georgia’s east coast of Georgia Georgia is one of the _______________ States of the US.

Georgia’s Relative Location Georgia is bordered by Florida on the south. Georgia is bordered by Alabama on the West Georgia is bordered by Tennessee on the __________ The Atlantic Ocean forms Georgia’s east coast of Georgia Georgia is one of the Southeastern States of the US.

Place What does it look like when you get there? Physical – Things made by nature – Ex: landforms, bodies of water, animals, climate, etc. Human Characteristics – made by the people living there – Ex: language, customs, beliefs, government, etc.

Physical Characteristics Mountains, plains, & plateaus, Land Features Climate, Bodies of Water

Human Characteristics People Culture Language Religion Cities Buildings and Landmarks

GRAPES Geography of Me #1 ***On this sheet please write the geography of your family according to the five themes. LOCATION (Latitude and Longitude): __________________________________________________ 2) PLACE (Physical Characteristics): _____________________________________________________ 3) Human Environment Interaction _________________________________________________ 4) Movement _________________________________________ 5) Region_____________________________________________
