7th Grade-FCAT 2.0 Review Basics of Life

Essential Question: What is the basic unit of structure and function for all living things?

Explore: Match the cell part and city part cards according to similar function, record answers in chart.

Explore: Cell wall construction scaffolding provides structure Cell membrane border patrol monitor what goes in/out Nucleus city hall controls all activities Cytoplasm road system allows for movement Chloroplasts solar panels at power plant attracts sunlight for energy Mitochondria power plant and lines provides energy Vacuoles garbage truck storage and waste removal

Explain: Why would a plant cell need a cell wall, but animal cells do not? Why would a plant cell need chloroplasts, but animal cells do not? Which cell organelle do you think is the most important? Why? What would happen to the cell if the cell membrane did not function correctly? What other organelles would be affected? A plant cell needs a cell wall for support and animal cells do not because they have exoskeletons. A plant cell needs chloroplasts to attract sunlight because they make their own food through photosynthesis. Answers will vary. If the cell membrane did not function properly then the cell would not be able to control what enters and exits the cell.

Elaborate A feature shared by all organisms is that they are made up of one or more ___________. A cell is the basic unit of ___________ and ____________ of life because they make up all living things and carry out the activities that keep a living thing alive. cells structure function

Elaborate Cells are able to make more cells like themselves. In fact, new cells can only come from _________ cells. These ideas form what is known as the _____________. existing Cell theory

Elaborate: All organisms, no matter how simple or how complex, must undergo similar processes to stay alive. ____________ is the process of keeping conditions inside a cell stable. Homeostasis

Elaborate In order for homeostasis to occur cells need to get ________ out of food, get rid of _________ and reproduce. energy waste

Elaborate respiration mitochondria sugar vacuoles Cellular ___________ is the main process for extracting energy out of food. This process is carried out by the ___________ of both plant and animal cells and will result in the breakdown of ____________ to release energy. This and other cell processes, generates waste. The waste must be disposed of by organelles such as ____________. respiration mitochondria sugar vacuoles

Elaborate The larger a cell gets, the more difficult it is to maintain homeostasis so the cell will _____________ during a process known as cell division. The result of cell division is 2 _____________ cells. This process helps organisms grow and replace damaged cells divide identical

Elaborate Some organisms, such as _________, are very simple; made of 1 or only a few cells. Other organisms, such as humans, are more complex; made of trillions of cells. bacteria

Elaborate In complex organisms, cells are organized into tissues, organs and organ systems that work together to keep the organism alive and healthy.

Elaborate _______ are groups of cells that work together to do a specific job. For example, muscles are made of muscle cells that all work to contract and relax a muscle. Plants have tissues too. For example, bark is a tissue that acts as a protective covering for woody plants. Tissues

Elaborate Just as cells join together to form tissues, different tissues join together to form ______________. An organ is made up of two or more tissues that work together to carry out a specific job. For example muscle tissue and epithelial tissue work together to form a stomach. organs

Elaborate An __________ is made up of all the organs that work together to do a specific job. Just like an individual cell must maintain homeostasis, an entire organism must also maintain homeostasis. This is accomplished by organ systems working together. Organ system

Description of Structure and Function Elaborate System Description of Structure and Function 19. includes many organs that breakdown food and dispose of food waste respiratory includes your nasal passages, trachea, bronchi and 20._______ to exchange gas circulatory includes the 21.____________, blood vessels and heart to transport substances 22. includes male testes and females ovaries to make sperm and egg excretory includes the kidneys and 23.____________________ to remove cellular waste immune includes skin, tears, saliva and white blood cells to fight 24.________________ 25. includes the brain, spinal cord to coordinated your bodies activities musculoskeletal includes bone, cartilage and 26.__________________ to help your body move Digestive lungs blood reproductive bladder infection nervous muscles
