Righteous Among the Nations Raoul Wallenberg Righteous Among the Nations

Raoul Wallenberg He was a Swedish diplomat, member of a prestigious and influential family (the Wallenberg family). In the latter stages of World War II, he worked tirelessly and ran great risks to save thousands of Hungarian Jews from the Holocaust.

Family Wallenberg was born in Kappsta (Sweden) in 1912. He was the son of Oscar Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish naval officer and Maria Sofia Wising. His father died of cancer when he was only three months old. In 1918, his mother remarried with Frederick von Dardel.

Work In 1931, he travelled to the United States to study architecture at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1935. Returning to Sweden, his grandfather got a job in South Africa, where he worked for a Swedish company that sells building materials. That same year he went to work at a Dutch bank in Haifa, where he made friendship with Hungarian Jews.

Holocaust In 1944 Wallenberg was appointed as first secretary of the Swedish delegation in Budapest. The Nazi campaign, during the Holocaust, deeply disturbed him. Then he used his diplomatic status to save many Hungarian Jews by giving them protected passports that identified them as Swedish awaiting repatriation.

Holocaust Also, Wallenberg rented some houses for Jewish refugees with funds from the embassy and put them in the entrance false signboards. Besides he negotiated with Nazi officials like Adolf Eichmann and Major General Gerhard Schmidhuber to get canceled the deportations to German concentration camps, giving them a threatening note from prosecution for war crimes. Plaque in Budapest, Hungary

Arrest Wallenberg was arrested by the Red Army on January 17, 1945 when they reached Budapest, probably on suspicion of being a spy for the United States. Until today the US government refuses to confirm or deny this fact.

Death On February 6, 1957 because of international pressure, the Soviets showed some documents where they said "the prisoner known to you as Wallenberg died in his cell last night."
