Internet Exploration: Advanced Searches Computer Information Technology – Section 3-3

The Internet Objectives: The Student will: Understand different methods of defining keywords for a search Understand Boolean logic operators as the work in a search

Internet Search Keywords By using some of the built in operators and thinking about your search you can limit the numbers of sites to those most useful.

Internet Search Keywords Operator How it works “ ” When a phrase is put in “ ” then the search engine will only return links that contain the exact phrase. For example a search of I have a dream finds 315,000,000 sites, but a search for “I have a dream” finds only 2,150,000 sites and all those are related to Martin Luther King speech. + Forces the search to include that keyword. - Forces the search engine to exclude words. For example a google search for pets finds 162,000,000 sites, but if I don’t want anything on cats or dogs I put pets –cat –dog I get 31,600,000

Internet Search Keywords Operator How it works AND AND is the default if you put 2 or more terms in the search. A search for dog cat or a search for dog AND cat gives only pages that contains the word dog and the word cat. Google finds 64,600,000 sites OR OR requires at least one of the terms joined by it to appear somewhere in the document. A search for dog OR cat finds 5,850,000,000 sites AND NOT AND NOT excludes documents containing whatever follows it. A search for dog AND NOT cat should find pages with the word dog but excluding the word cat. Google does not support the AND NOT command but rather changes it dog -cat

Examples To search for a twins support group in Minnesota, but not return pages relating to the Minnesota Twins baseball team: twins support group Minnesota –baseball To find pages that include either “Tahiti” or “Hawaii” or both terms Tahiti OR Hawaii To find Islands in the Caribbean but not Jamaica +islands + Caribbean -Jamaica

Google Advanced Search Tab
