Certification of Trusted Repositories Wim Hugo SAEON CDIO WDS Scientific Committee Vice-Chair

ICSU World Data System As an ICSU Interdisciplinary body, the mission of the World Data System is to support ICSU’s vision by promoting long-term stewardship of, and universal and equitable access to, quality-assured scientific data and data services, products, and information across a range of disciplines in the natural and social sciences, and the humanities. ICSU-WDS aims to facilitate scientific research under the ICSU umbrella by coordinating and supporting trusted scientific data services for the provision, use, and preservation of relevant datasets, while strengthening their links with the research community.

Core certification: Trustworthy Digital Repository Trust is at the heart of Data Sharing: Users, Depositors, Funders… Standards can play an important role in establishing Trust through Certification! Standards can play an important role in establishing this trust. There has long been a demand for some way to evaluate, to assess the trustworthiness of a digital repository. Over the last few years a number of evaluation guidelines are becoming available. These standards not only take into account the technical infrastructure and standards, but also look at organisational, financial, staffing and legal aspects, workflows, risk management, etc.

Global Framework for Certification

DSA and WDS Core Certification DSA and WDS: core mechanisms for repository assessment with many commonalities WDS: 66 repositories and 10 networks, DSA: 57 repositories DSA and WDS: WG under Research Data Alliance Harmonize core certification requirements and procedures, ultimately setting the stage for a global shared framework including other standards

DSA-WDS Common Requirements Background information: Context Organizational infrastructure: Mission/scope Licenses Continuity of access Confidentiality and ethics Organizational infrastructure Expert guidance

DSA-WDS Common Requirements Digital object management: Data integrity and authenticity Appraisal Documented storage procedures Preservation plan Data quality Workflows Data discovery and identification Data reuse

DSA-WDS Common Requirements Technology: Technical infrastructure Security Additional information and applicant feedback

DSA-WDS Common Requirements Joint Assessment Processes: URLs to evidence strongly encouraged Maturity ratings strongly encouraged Assessments to be publicly available Successful completion means certification in both DSA and WDS Renewals every three years

DSA-WDS Common Requirements Sustainable Review Process Pool of reviewers (training provided) drawn from DSA and WDS Two reviewers (from DSA and WDS) for each application, approved by the new DSA– WDS Certification Board Mutual Governance Process DSA and WDS agree to work together to implement and steward the partnership

DSA-WDS Common Requirements Introduce the new common requirements over the course of this year (launched at IDW 2016) Continue work on the Common Procedures Conduct outreach to other standards like nestor-SEAL and ISO
