The egan wheel Learning Objective; To describe and illustrate the different aspects of sustainability on the Egan Wheel.

Starter: 10 minutes You are going to think about what your ideal place would be like to live in, in Hong Kong. We are presuming that you are designing your community from scratch. Now we can’t do much about the weather, so lets plan for things we can change! BUT, you don’t get to decide who lives there, its just a random group of the population from Hong Kong.

Remember, “sustainability” has several aspects “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”

The Egan Wheel This wheel was designed by Sir John Egan who had a passion for developing the ideal sustainable world, starting with small communities (he focused on eight aspects!) Sustainable communities are key to achieving overall sustainability for the planet.

Step 1 You should have one circle diagram each. Make sure you write your name somewhere on the sheet. Sustainable community

Step 2 For each of the 8 sections, write some bullet points to explain what your community would look like for that section. Do this in the blank segments. You must remember that other people will be living there too. Think about what facilities you would provide. Think about the physical and social environment that you would like to create. Sustainable community

STEP 3: Draw or find an image that you think represents each of the 8 sections. Copy and paste it onto your Egan wheel in the correct location. Annotate it to explain how it illustrates that aspect of sustainability EQUITY All people of all ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation and age are treated the same

Sustainable community Social& Cultural Governance Economy Transport& connectivity Sustainable community Services Housing&built environment Environmental Equity

Home learning (2017-18) Is Kennedy Town a sustainable community? Add to your introduction work: A copy of the Egan Wheel from today’s lesson (can be a photograph) A short explanation of the Egan wheel including examples.
