KS3 COMPUTING Networks Lesson 1 Network Intro. KS3 Computing Networks

Lesson Aims 1 Understand what a network is and why they are used 2 Understand the two types of networks 3 Understand the three topologies used to connect networks 4 Understand the three types of media used to make networks

A network is two or more devices that are connected together Introduction What is a Network? A network is two or more devices that are connected together A device could be a desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone and many others

Why would people want to make a network? Advantages Why would people want to make a network? 1 Share resources such as printers and other peripherals 2 Share an Internet connection 3 Allows users to hot-desk 4 Allows security, backups and updates to be centrally managed 5 Site software licenses can often be cheaper than invidious licenses

What are the drawbacks you need to be aware of? Disadvantages What are the drawbacks you need to be aware of? 1 Greater risk of malware spreading 2 Initial set up costs can be expensive 3 Employ a person or team of people to manage it 4 If the server breaks the whole network could come down

Watch the following video on networks Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWTJKcg7Pj8

Types of Network The geographical distance often determines what type of network is used Local Area Network Wide Area Network There are also other types of network such as a PAN and VPN, but they are beyond the scope of this lesson

The topology is the layout/pattern of the way a network is connected Network Topologies The topology is the layout/pattern of the way a network is connected Bus Ring Star

The media is the technology used to connect the network together Network Media The media is the technology used to connect the network together Copper Cable Fibre Optic Cable Wireless
