Born January 18, 1858 Graduated from Chicago Medical School in 1883 Worked with the Equal Rights League First nationally renowned African American surgeon Performed first successful open heart surgery 1893 on James Cornish

Appointed chief surgeon at Freedmen’s Hospital 1894 Visiting clinical professor at Meharry Founded Provident Hospital

First non-segregated hospital in the United States Provident Hospital Founded in 1891 in Chicago First non-segregated hospital in the United States Was forced to close in 1987, but was reopened in 1993 as Provident Hospital of Cook County Few hospitals were open for black patients
