Gold rush John Sutter is credited with discovered gold in California. Gold is discovered in 1848 on Sutter’s sawmill

There be Gold in Thar Hills 2 Reasons for the Gold Rush were: A 16 oz gold nugget was found, immigration to the west in search for riches. Whites believe in Manifest Destiny

There be Gold in Thar Hills The type of people that went to California were usually single males. They were called 49er’s.

Life on a Mining Camp Miners have to contend with high prices, gamblers and criminals San Francisco in 1845 pop. of 400, but after gold 32,000 by 1850!

Who came looking for Gold? The Chinese came to escape war, poverty and unemployment They were called “nativists” The U.S. created the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, it prohibits the immigration of Chinese into America.

Statehood for California It becomes a state in 1850 California enters as a free state. California upsets the balance.

Oregon Trail

Oregon “Fever 2,000 mile trip across dangerous, unknown territory. The first non-native Americans to travel to Oregon were the Fur Traders. Pioneers traveled in wagon trains for safety and organization.

Oregon “FeVER” The types of people that traveled were families and Fur Trappers and traders. Reason for traveling to Oregon Country was for fertile farmland and mild climate.
