CONCRETE PROTECTION MATERIALS & TECHNIQUES DONE BY AHMED AL-HAWAS FAYEZ AL-SAIKHAN

OUTLINE INTRODUCTION. CONCRETE SURFACE SEALERS. FRP.

No protection means !!!

This is Why protection is needed More durable. Less cost . ( maintenance and repair) To know how costly is the repair:

This reflects the importance of protection

protection techniques The key is: permeability. (How)? It should be minimized by: 1-low w/c ratio. 2- adequate cement content. 3-control of aggregate size and grading. 4-use of mineral admixtures.

Providing adequate concrete cover . Limiting the crack width on concrete surface . Providing waterproof membranes on concrete surface . Applying protective coatings on steel surface . Installing cathodic protection system . Concrete surface sealers. FRP. ( fiber reinforced polymer)

Materials used for protection

Equipment used in protection

Two protection materials were selected: Concrete surface sealers. FRP. ( Fiber Reinforced Polymer)

Concrete surface sealers: Concrete sealers are finish coatings used to protect the concrete.   Sealers act to prevent damage from traffic, water and chemical agents.  Sealers reduce the porosity of concrete and prevent water and dirt from getting into the concrete.

Types of Sealers: Film Formers: creat a barrier on the concrete’s surface. used for : enhancing exposed aggregate colored concrete since they are shiny.

-These sealers penetrate into the concrete. Penetrates: -These sealers penetrate into the concrete.  -They get 1 to 4 millimeters into the concrete to increase water repellency. -Unlike the film formers, they do not leave a sheen or gloss.

Which Type of Sealer to Use? Depends on: -What do you want the surface to look like ? -What type of maintenance are you willing to do?

film formers glossy finish penetrate matte finish OR slip-free surface

Examples on sealers: Acrylic silicone silane siloxane Resin wax forms

Sealer Application: Clean Up: Surface Prep: - clean the concrete surface before sealing. - coat the floor for 10 to 15 minutes . Apply Sealer:   Clean Up: - Wash up with warm soap and water immediately.

Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP): For years, civil engineers have been in search for alternatives to steels and alloys to combat the high costs of repair and maintenance of structures damaged by corrosion and heavy use. Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is a relatively new class of composite material manufactured from fibers and resins (and has proven efficient and economical for the development and repair of new and deteriorating structures in civil engineering.

FRP Structure composed of : carbon or glass, provide the strength and stiffness. The matrix commonly made of polyester, Epoxy or Nylon, binds and protects the fibers from damage, and transfers the stresses between fibers.

Manufacturing OF FRP : They are pre-engineered and pre-fabricated in a shop, then assembled and installed at a bridge site where a wearing surface is added.

Applications of FRP as in bridges and columns built completely out of FRP composites have demonstrated exceptional durability, and effective resistance to effects of environmental exposure

Advantages of FRP: Light weight . ( FRP deck 25 psf - Concrete deck 119 psf ) Resistance to de-icing salts and other chemicals. Ease and Fast installation . Reduced traffic delay . Good durability . Long service life . Cost savings

Disadvantages of FRP: Higher initial cost compared to a conventional concrete deck. Lack of design standards and conventions for material characterization Limited FRP experience within the construction industry. FRP's low modulus of elasticity leads to a deflection driven design which does not allow a designer to fully capitalize on the FRP's strength
