Communication - Pregame Upon Arrival at the Game Site: Crew Representative Communicates with Game Management: Notify Home Head Coach you have arrived. Confirm Game Start Time. Determine any special circumstances or pregame ceremonies scheduled. Obtain game balls for rubbing. Rev 6/2017 Mouse Click or down to continue

Communication - Pregame Pregame Preparation: Use the Pregame Conference Outline (PCO) to conduct a thorough pregame conference in five to ten minutes. The phrase “Standard Two- Man Mechanics” IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE pregame conference and demonstrates an amateur attitude. Refer to Charts on the PCO as a standard mechanics reminder as needed. Rev 6/2017 Mouse Click or down to continue

Communication – Plate Conference Plate umpire conducts the plate conference. Limit conversation to: Lineup Cards Coaches’ Legal Equipment Certification Ground Rules Use FHSAA provided card for: FHSAA Sportsmanship Expectations Jewelry Rule Compliance Confirm National Anthem/Announcements Base Umpire reserves comment unless or until asked. Rev 6/2017 Mouse Click or down to continue

Communication – On Field Communication Base Umpire (U1) working from “A” Position: No need for signals (there’s nobody on base): Base Umpire Quarterbacks on “Trouble Balls” Announces “Going Out”, pointing up. When covering home plate on “gappers” – “I’m At Home”. Rev 6/2017 Mouse Click or down to continue

Communication – On Field Communication Base Umpire (U1) working from “B” or “C” Position: Signal when situation has changed: Outs/Rotation Direction; Outs/Infield Fly/Tag-up Coverage; Outs/Time-Play Signals should be subtle and responded to. Plate Umpire Quarterbacks on “Trouble Balls” BU has all fly balls in outfield until the PU announces: “I’m on the line” (Right Field Line – NOT rotating to 3rd) or “I’ve got the Ball” (Left Field Line – Still rotating to 3rd). Rev 6/2017 Mouse Click or down to continue

Communication – On Field Communication Other considerations: Plate Umpire taking outfield fly ball catches: “I am on the line” – RF Line and NOT rotating “I have the ball’ – LF line and will rotate to 3rd if necessary Arrival on or not Rotating: “I coming to 3rd base”, “I am at 3rd base” “I am going/staying home” “I am at 3rd if he goes” – double tag-up play Dropped Third Strikes Clear & obvious signals from BU Rundowns: “I have this end” - 1st - 2nd or 2nd- 3rd “I have this play” - 3rd-HP w/more runners on Plays between Umpires Eye contact and chest tap Rev 6/2017 Mouse Click or down to continue

Communication – Post Game Communication Post Game Crew Conference Review game situations that occurred: Anything unusual or unanticipated. Review rules that came into play: Confirm proper rule application relating to spirit of the game and custom – “dirty end of the stick”. Discuss any questions/clear up any confusion using the rule & case books. Review coverage issues that came into play: Confirm proper coverages during complex scenarios; Review adapted coverages and suitability to the situation – could it have been differently and more effectively? Rev 6/2017 Mouse Click or down to continue

Communication – Post Game Communication Post Game Administrative Tasks Complete any forms that may be required for local, county, state or other administrators. Complete the Arbiter Game Report. Review any evaluation provided, verbal or written. Rev 6/2017 Mouse Click or down to continue
