What level book will my child read in Guided Reading?

Guided Reading is INSTRUCTIONAL and should therefore be more challenging than the level going home. However, when children are new to the colour they take the same colour home that they read in Guided Reading. As their confidence grows, we guide them higher while still sending home lower.

A child on Red 3 would be guided reading and independent reading at red as they have only just started that level. A child on Red 5 would guide at Yellow then have Red sent home until the teacher felt they could move to Yellow 6 for independent reading

What will my child do in a Guided Reading session?

Pre read the book and answer an oral question as a group or make a prediction.

Assertive Mentoring and Benchmarking as Assessment Tools

Assertive Mentoring In each Guided Reading session, teachers focus on one or two AFS. At the end of the session the teacher will enter a x if they feel the child has achieved the objective, a \ if they are beginning to achieve the objective and a . if they have not yet achieved the objective. This is repeated for each GR session.

Dots lines & crosses are entered half termly into an Excel Spreadsheet and provide an overview of group performance. They identify gaps in teaching & learning or weaknesses, which in turn informs planning and provide a sub level at which each child is working ; emerging, developing, secure or next stage ready. To be secure a child must achieve 65% of the objectives with a x and to be NSR they must achieve 85% with a x. This is in line with ARE for end of KS1 and Ks2 statutory tests. COMPREHENSION IS KEY!

How can I help at home?

Talking about the books you read is just as important as reading them. Discussing a story or a book with your child helps your child understand it and connect it to his or her own experience of life. It can also help enrich your child's vocabulary with new words and phrases and this is turn will support their writing.

Ask your child about the kinds of books he or she would like to read. Here are some ways to help your child acquire skills in comprehension, reasoning, and critical thinking: Ask your child about the kinds of books he or she would like to read. Talk to your child about your favourite books from childhood, and maybe read them. Encourage your child to ask questions and comment on the story and pictures in a book – before, during, and after reading it. Look at the cover and the title of a book with your child, and ask your child what he or she thinks might happen in the story. Encourage your child to think critically about the story. Does he or she agree or disagree with the author or what the characters do? Why? Think out loud about the story as you read, and encourage your child to do the same. For example, "I wonder why that happened?”.

What about when my child get “stuck” Try to encourage your child to use these strategies… Think about what word would make sense in the story or sentence. Sound the word out. Think of a word that looks and sounds similar. Look for parts of the word that are familiar. Check the pictures and the punctuation marks for clues. Go back and read again. Ask for help with the word. Read past the word.
