LAT Accommodations that Provide Direct Linguistic Support

LAT Math and Science Direct Linguistic Support Accommodations Linguistic simplification Oral translation Reading assistance Bilingual dictionary Bilingual glossary LAT test administrators should have a clear understanding of the type of assistance they are and are not permitted to provide in making linguistic accommodations for LAT. The box on page 144 of the TAKS manual contains important information about assistance that is not permitted. Pages 148–155 contain explanations and examples to familiarize test administrators with the type of linguistic assistance they are permitted to provide. The amount of time you spend reviewing this information with test administrators should depend on how familiar they are with the LAT process and which accommodations they will provide. LAT ELA Direct Linguistic Support Accommodations Bilingual dictionary Reading aloud – word or phrase Reading aloud – entire test item Oral translation – word or phrase Clarification – word or phrase Not all of these are applicable to LAT administrations of the writing sections of grade 10 ELA. See slide 16 for details. Review the descriptions on pp. 156–157 of the TAKS manual Pages 156–157 of the TAKS manual describe each reading/ELA accommodation. LAT test administrators should have a clear understanding of the type of assistance they are and are not permitted to provide in making linguistic accommodations. Pages 158–166 of the TAKS manual present a student scenario that describes how to provide linguistic accommodations appropriately during reading/ELA tests. The amount of time you spend reviewing this information with test administrators should depend on how familiar they are with the LAT process and which accommodations they will provide. LAT ELA Direct Linguistic Support Accommodations Tested vocabulary words: Oral translation, clarification, and assistance in locating the applicable meaning/translation of a word in the dictionary are NOT permitted Students must not be provided these types of assistance with tested vocabulary in the reading selection or the test questions LAT ELA test administration directions specify which items contain tested vocabulary TEA Student Assessment Division

LAT Grade 10 ELA Direct Linguistic Support Accommodations Description of table: The table outlines the direct linguistic support accommodations for LAT ELA tests. * All LAT students (regardless of their approved linguistic accommodations) may receive assistance to understand the written composition prompt and the rest of the instructions on the test page containing the prompt. The language may be clarified, translated, or read aloud at the student’s request. It is not necessary to predetermine and document the need for this as an accommodation. These three types of assistance are not allowed on the written composition itself. 17
