Daniel Phillips Antimicrobial Pharmacist

Why?

Why? “raising awareness of existing campaigns in community and hospital settings to improve prescribing practices and compliance with antibiotic policies/guidelines, for example, SMTF, TARGET” “Obtain specimens only where clinical need is clearly indicated and support the timely transfer to laboratories” “ensuring that process elements of antibiotic prescribing relevant to nursing are clearly communicated, implemented and monitored (for example, ensuring prescription charts are correctly completed with drug, stop date and IV to oral switch information)” “Educating patients and their carers on how to take antibiotics as prescribed in the home setting and when to report unresolved or worsening symptoms” “dispensing antibiotics at the right time and under the optimal circumstances required to maintain therapeutic levels”

What is it? Short guide: Introduction for nurses to antimicrobial stewardship 6 key areas where nurses can help to improve safe and effective antimicrobial use across the health board Enables all nurses to access information around antimicrobial stewardship

What Next? Engage with senior nurses to decide how best to disseminate. Link in with nurse medicines management training. Incorporate into surgical antibiotic behaviour change project. Use outside secondary care: district/practice nurses, student nurses etc

Thank you Any Questions?
