The Lord’s Prayer Our Father Who art in Heaven Hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come Thy will be done On earth as it is in Heaven Give us this day our daily bread And forgive us our trespasses As we forgive those who trespass against us And lead us not into temptation But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Lesson Three: Jesus’ Law

Covenants Covenant with Adam Covenant with Noah Covenant with Abraham Covenant with Moses Covenant with David

Covenant with Adam God promised Adam (and Eve!) eternal life if only they would abide by his commands.

Covenant with Noah God made a covenant with Noah after the Great Flood.

Covenant with Abraham God promised Abram (He renamed him Abraham) that he would have a son and have a multitude of children that would be too numerous to count.

Covenant with Moses God gave Moses the 10 Commandments and the rest of the Mosaic Law, telling the Israelites God’s promises and their obligations.

Covenant with David God promised David success if he remained faithful to God.

New Covenant Jesus came to inaugurate a new, greater covenant than those which came before.

Contract vs. Covenant Covenants are more personal than contracts. Marriage is a covenant man and woman enter into because of love for one another, entered into by the profession of vows before man and God. It is binding, it is possible to break the marriage covenant by breaking the vows to love, honor, and cherish, but breaking vows hurts the marriage relationship.

Commandments The first three of the 10 Commandments focus on love of God; the last 7 focus on love of neighbor. Letter of the Law vs. Spirit of the Law

The Beatitudes 1) Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 2) Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 3) Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 4) Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied 5) Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. 6) Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 7) Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 8) Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 9) Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. (Mt. 5:3-12)

Activity Book, p. 3 Fulfillment of the Law 1) When Jesus established the New Covenant, did he set aside the Old Law? – No, Jesus did not set aside the Old Law, he fulfilled it. 2) What is the foundation of the Old Law? – The foundation of the Old Law is love. 3) What did Jesus say were the two greatest commandments? – Jesus said the two greatest commandments are to love God above all things, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself.

Activity Book, p. 3 4) Which commandment summarizes the first three of the Ten Commandments? – The commandment to love God above all things summarizes the first three of the Ten Commandments. 5) Which commandment summarizes the last seven of the Ten Commandments? – The commandment to love one’s neighbor as one’s self summarizes the last seven of the Ten Commandments. 6) Why is free will necessary if we are to follow Jesus? – Free will allows us to choose freely to follow Jesus.

Homework Read pp. 15-16, paragraphs 11-17 Write a prayer asking God to bless those named in the Beatitudes. You may decorate your prayers however you like. 5 sentence minimum!
