The Thriller Genre Thriller is a broad genre of literature, film, and television programming that uses suspense, tension and excitement as the main elements. Thrillers heavily stimulate the viewer's moods giving them a high level of anticipation, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, surprise, anxiety and/or terror. There are different types of Genre or a Sub-Genre E.G. crime thriller or noire thriller. What an audience expects from any sort of thriller is to be held in constant suspense and tension that can be cut with a knife (too chatty!), the audience needs to be constantly on the edge of their seats wondering what’s going to happen next. Expand on these points and use visuals!

Timeline Of The Thriller Genre 1934-The man who knew too much Dir. (Alfred Hitchcock) 1973- High plains differ Dir.(Clint Eastwood) 1988- Die Hard Dir.(John McTiernan) 2008- Dark knight Dir.(Christopher Nolan) I chose these films because they are all iconic thrillers we have studies/talked about and they have all stood out from the crowd. 1927- The Lodger Dir.(Alfred Hitchcock) 1960-Psycho Dir.(Alfred Hitchcock) 1975-Jaws Dir.(Steven Spielberg) 1995- Seven Dir.(David Fincher)

Characterisation The Hero/protagonist can be very mysterious and the face of the hero might be hidden to build the suspense of now knowing who they are, but when shown they are usually shown in a pure light so they can be seen properly with nothing to hide from the audience. The anti-protagonist/villain might not have his face shown and might not even know or suspect who the villain is until the end of the film, but when the villain is show they would be shown in a dark light or shadows to show that they have something to hide. The mise-en-scene for a villain would be very dark and shady, the props used might be a gun to show violence or a cigarette to show stress or on edge, they would be dressed in dark un revealing clothing to hide identity. The hero could also be dressed in dark unrevealing clothing, the make up might be cuts or wounds to suggest that they have been in a fight and constantly keep the audience on edge and thinking that the hero might die.

Construction The camera work in a thriller will usually do things like hide the faces of the main characters and only show the characters in a reflection so the audience is held in constant suspense and unknown. The editing of a thriller uses a lot of cuts and can be quite jumpy for example a jump cut can be used to show the start of something then cut to the end of that thing to build mystery tension and so the audience hasn’t got a clue of what is going on or let the audience make up what happened in their heads. The music and sounds for a thriller might be very low drumming to show a heartbeat or a really high screech noise to unnerve the audience and show that a particular character isn’t right in the head. When something dramatic is happening the music might speed up then when it reaches the climax of drama the music will slow back down again.
