Overview of the WISE SoE TCM data flow Data sources and handling Data types reported Geographical coverage Problems encountered How do we improve the data flow?

Sources for WISE SoE TCM data Data source Nations/Organisations submitting data Format of data submissions QA checks done EIONET EEA member countries + Balkan countries Eionet template Checking logical errors and ranges ICES OSPAR, HELCOM, and AMAP Voluntary contributions “Free format” (oceanography) and 3.2 format Level of QA checking dependent on datatype MEDPOL EEA member countries + Balkan countries Medpol template Checking logical errors and ranges ?

Datatypes covered Datatype EIONET ICES MEDPOL Stations x Nutrients Seawater Hazardous substances biota Hazardous substances sediment Hazardous substances Seawater Pressures Flux Stations Riverine Inputs Direct discharges

New datatypes Ecological Quality Ratio (EQR) based on benthic fauna (test data flow in 2009) Biological community data? (zoobenthos, phytobenthos, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fish community)

Important messages to data submitters: Use the data “funnel” that you find most convenient to use If submitting oceanographic data to ICES provide those in a format that is easy to output from the national/regional database – don’t force the data into a specific template Do not submit the same data into different data funnels – risk of duplication

Common errors and inconsistencies in data submissions – ranked according to severity Concentration out of range – usually unit error Dry Wet Ratio not given as a percentage but as a true ratio (e.g. < 1) Basis not filled in – necessary for the recalculation in relation to different basis used Sampling depth missing – crucial information in relation to oceanographic data Latitude and longitude out of range – usually caused by swopping Concentrations null (missing) – error or not measured? Determinand names not according to code lists

Suggestion on how to improve submission of data Use the data for assessments and indicators – “encourage” by displaying empty spots on the European map Data digging – there is a loot of data out there to be picked up but it requires resources Improved national/regional coordination and information
